Prospecting – The Basics of Network Marketing

Network Marketing

So you have joined a Network Marketing company.

Now what?

The most important thing to understand first of all is What is Network Marketing? Most of the people who I have come across over the years have a negative view on this. May be because of ignorance, or what they may have heard before or just simply they are afraid to come out of their shell and try something new. Instead of giving you the details I would point you to a very beautifully written article on the same question (What is Network Marketing ?)

What is the second step ?

Prospecting

What do you say when prospecting?

Lot has been said and written about prospecting in this industry. And no doubt your upline would have given you lot of training on this and videos to watch. What I have seen and gone through over the years in this industry is that whether the prospect joins or not is a secondary issue, the main thing is whether he or she listens to you in the first place.

It all starts the moment you meet a person. In today’s times the attention span of an average person is so low that it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep someone engaged. Why do you think all the commercials are mostly 30 secs flat?

So even before you are ready to show a presentation to your prospect it is vital that he knows something about what is being done here.

The hardest question most people have to answer is “WHAT DO YOU DO?” A thousand things run through your head, then something like this might come flying out of your mouth:

“Well I am in a position to help people and provide them with means for time and financial freedom, using a method…”

WHAT ?

Do you really expect a novice to really understand what you are saying. Seriously think about it. Does your prospect really want to know: -

  • How the compensation plan works?
  • Who are the founders of the company?
  • What is the company’s turnover?

These are the things which come later. The first step is to let your prospect know, what he wants to know?

So what does the prospect what to hear from you? He is thinking about only three things

  • How much can I earn?
  • What business are you in?
  • What do I need to do, in order to earn?

Does your prospect need to hear how the compensation plan works?

  • If he is not going to join, then NO. If he is then it can be explained in the training

Does the prospect need to know who are the founders of the company?

  •  If he is not going to join, then NO. If he is then it can be explained in the training

Does the prospect need to know the turnover of the company?

  • If he is not going to join, then NO. If he is then it can be explained in the training

So the next time someone asks you “What do you do?” Say this :

It will take me a minute to explain that. Once you say this usually what you have done is engaged the prospect as well as gotten his attention. The trick is to keep that attention alive.

Here is a sample of what I would say in the next one minute : -

  1. You do  not need to change yourself. Continue to promote and recommend the things you like. Like you do when when you recommend movies, phones etc
  2. I am in wellness industry which means we have this fantastic product, that you and your entire family can use. It is great for health and helps in fighting 14 illnesses and has been certified by various organisations around the world.
  3. In order to earn an extra income of say 300$ per month all you have to do is to find 2 families that want to enhance their living, just like you.

And that’s it what do you think?

I have given the prospect all the wanted to know, not what I wanted to say. One of the three things might happen after that:-

  1. The prospect may JOIN
  2. The prospect may say NO
  3. The prospect asks you questions

The trick of this is that no matter what the prospect says you should always say OK…

If he decides to JOIN. You say OK and get your forms out and sign him in

If he says No. Then you have saved so much time.

If he asks you more questions, then is the time to show you company specific presentation in details because now the prospect shows interest in what you have to say. All need to take care of is to keep him engaged in the conversation and ask lot of question. The answers you get from him should determine how you are going to proceed with your presentation.

By following this one minute introduction just see how much time you can save and how many more presentations you can show to people who are actually interested.

As every networker and and salesperson will tell you: -

“It’s a number game. The more prospects you show your plan to, the more business you do.”
